"Off the record."
Say it out loud and it means two different things depending on which room you're in. To one crowd, it's what you admit only once the tape's stopped rolling — the unofficial version, deniable, never entered anywhere. To another, it's simply where the night begins: the needle drops into the groove, the bass comes up, and everyone in the room quietly agrees that whatever happens here doesn't leave with them. Both versions run on the same trust. Some things only exist between the people who showed up for them, in that hour, on that floor.
